Caliper
Health Device Interoperability
About the Caliper HL7 FHIR Accelerator
Caliper is an HL7 FHIR Accelerator program that brings together a diverse, international community of stakeholders working to realize an ecosystem of interoperable health device technologies. "Caliper" speaks to a device that is used for precision and quality—recognizing that the seamless integration of healthcare devices will advance safety, quality of care and innovation.

Objective
Caliper's device informatics scope is broad: Everything – Everywhere – Everyone!
We're intentionally taking a broad view; one that isn't confined to a specific type of device, a particular care setting, or a narrow group of users. With this wide scope, the Caliper aims to advance the development and adoption of device informatics standards through implementation tooling and testing, educational webinars and workshops, pilot deployments, and other initiatives that support a vibrant ecosystem of interoperable health devices seamlessly integrated into an individual's care.
Use Cases & Work Program
Although this new implementation community officially launched on January 1, 2026, it is not beginning from scratch. The Caliper implementation community is building on a strong foundation as it finalizes its initial work program. The community will:
- Steward the joint HL7-IHE Gemini Device Interoperability program, with a particular focus on advancing Service-oriented Device Point-of-care Interoperability (SDPi) implementation, testing and product conformity assessment
- Identify and develop the capabilities needed to enable FHIR-enabled device technologies, ensuring they can be effectively integrated across care settings.
- Explore emerging opportunities for AI-enabled devices and systems, especially those that leverage high-fidelity, high-frequency device-sourced data, support home-based care, and empower consumers.
Given the breadth of this program, use cases will span acute and post-acute care, chronic care, and health and wellness, supporting device technologies across an individual's entire healthcare journey.

Support Our Mission—Get Engaged!
Caliper members play a vital role in advancing standards-based, interoperable health device technologies. They help identify and prioritize the needs of all stakeholders in the implementation community and resource and oversee the projects that bring this work to life. Our members represent device users—both clinicians and individuals, industry developers and integrators, public agencies/regulators, clinical engineering, academic research and more. Everyone has a place in the Caliper community!
