HL7 Implementation Guides for CDA® R2: greenCDA Modules for CCD®, Release 1

DESCRIPTION

The Clinical Document Architecture Release 2.0 (CDA R2) addresses universal requirements for exchange and management of structured clinical documents. The approach described in this document, The HL7 Implementation Guide for CDA® Release 2: greenCDA Modules for CCD, Release 1 (US Realm) or greenCDA, maintains the full utility of the CDA R2 while defining a method of working with an implementation-specific XML (Extensible Markup Language) that is easier to implement. greenCDA, if adopted, will provide a strategy for developers who generate templated CDA. This is not a substitute for CDA. The approach described here simplifies instance creation while it asserts as a primary principle that any simplification must also define a method to deliver valid, normative CDA. This approach is called “greenCDA” because it is good for the environment!

ALTERNATIVE NAMES

HL7 Implementation Guides for CDA® R2: greenCDA Modules for CCD®, Release 1 may also go by the following names or acronyms:

"HL7 IG for CDAR2: greenCDA Modules for CCD, R1",greenCDA

TARGETS

  • Healthcare Computer Software Vendors to support healthcare facility workflows.
  • Healthcare Institutions
  • National Health Information Exchange infrastructures

BENEFITS

  • A greenCDA schema will have a shorter learning curve and yet deliver valid CDA documents for people who don’t know CDA or the RIM
  • Easier to work with for instance generation
  • Beneficiaries—the people who get the shorter learning curve and the easier model to work with—are developers who must generate CDA documents and who do not know CDA or the Reference Information Model (RIM)

IMPLEMENTATIONS/CASE STUDIES

  • Software consultants and vendors having created greenCDA modules include Lantana Group and MITRE.

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

Our standard, the HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA ®), addresses universal requirements for exchange and management of structured clinical documents. It supports the exchange of clinical documents between those involved in the care of a patient and allows for the re-use of clinical data for public health reporting, quality monitoring, patient safety and clinical trials. HL7 has now developed the greenCDA Implementation Guide, a streamlined version of the

CDA that maintains the full utility of CDA while making it easier to implement.

greenCDA features include:

• XML schema validation

• Simple business names

• Tagged data elements in extensible library

• Rapid path to Meaningful Use compliance

  • modular XML with business names generate Java, .NET
  • single style sheet display, as for all CDA
  • extensible to physician documentation requirements and quality

HL7’s CDA template library already contains over 1,000 metadata tagged data elements covering CCD ®, common types of clinical documents (HL7/Health Story History & Physical, Consult & more), public health (CDC’s Healthcare Associated Infection Reports) and quality reporting data elements.
