HL7 CDA® R2 Implementation Guide: National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Reports for Antimicrobial Use (AU) in Long Term Care Facilities (HAI_AULTC_CDA), STU Edition 1.1.0 - US Realm

DESCRIPTION

This implementation guide (IG) specifies standards for electronic submission of Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) reports to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for Long Term Care Facilities (LTCFs). When healthcare enterprises choose to participate in NHSN, they must report to CDC reportable events such as Antimicrobial Use treatment events. This standard opens the channel for data submission by all applications compliant with the data coding requirements defined in this guide. In this release, reportable AU treatment data are defined as CDA standards.

You will find sample files, schematron validation files, stylesheets and the CDA schema in Git: https://github.com/HL7/CDA-hai-ltcf/tree/main/CDA-hai-aultc-1.1.0

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

This HL7 project was initiated in 2019 and was a dual IG project (1 FHIR and an analogous CDA IG) for Long Term Care Facilities reporting to NHSN. These dual IGs were balloted in August 2019, and published in 2020.

In 2023, a third IG (CDA only) project was initiated underneath this existing HL7 project. This CDA IG will be specific to LTCF reporting Antimicrobial Use (AU) events and summary data to NHSN. This CDA IG was balloted during the JAN2024 ballot cycle and will be published later within 2024.
