Section 3: Implementation Guides

HL7 Version 2 to FHIR Edition 1

DESCRIPTION

The HL7 V2 to FHIR Implementation Guide supports the mapping of HL7 Version 2 messages segments, datatypes and vocabulary to HL7 FHIR Release 4.0 Bundles, Resources, Data Types and Coding Systems. It represents a cumulative mapping of the standard, not any HL7 v2 based implementation guide.

This implementation guide provides the Concept Maps and references to the Spreadsheets used to generate them, as well as additional information and material to support validation and testing of implementations.

While the guide provides the mapping that represent the formal definitions of HL7 v2 and HL7 FHIR, the implementer should consider local implementation variations that require different actual mappings. The implementer is fully responsible to identify these variances and address them with the goal to map them as close to the intended FHIR elements per this guide.

See the specification at http://hl7.org/fhir/uv/v2mappings/STU1

ALTERNATIVE NAMES

HL7 Version 2 to FHIR Edition 1 may also go by the following names or acronyms:

"V2 IG: v2-to-FHIR, R1",v2-to-FHIR, v2-FHIR,V2 to FHIR (V2)

BENEFITS

  • Enables a higher level of consistency when translating data from HL7 v2, or its source systems by inference, to the intended replacement representations in HL7 FHIR
  • Reduces the implementation effort for such mappings as the ConceptMaps included provide an opportunity to for automation of the initial configuration of mapping tools

DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND

The development of the guide started back in 2018, before FHIR R4 was finalized, and demonstrates the complexities and variety on both the HL7 v2 and HL7 FHIR to build consensus what the most appropriate standard mapping should be.

We encourage all users of the guide to continue to provide feedback as we will be expanding R4 focused mappings and add R6 focused mappings at a more frequent publication interval.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

The guide aids in achieving a higher level of consistency when translating data from HL7 v2, or its source systems by inference, to the intended replacement representations in HL7 FHIR. It furthermore can reduce the implementation effort for such mappings as the ConceptMaps included provide an opportunity to for automation of the initial configuration of mapping tools.

While FHIR to v2 mapping is not in scope as it has not been fully analyzed, one could use it to be better informed on what the mappings might be.
