HL7 FHIR® Implementation Guide: Application Feature Framework, Edition 1
DESCRIPTION
The FHIR Application Feature Framework Implementation Guide (IG) defines a standardized way for healthcare applications to explicitly describe, publish, and negotiate their functional capabilities (“features”) within FHIR-based interoperability. It introduces a set of logical models, extensions, profiles, and operations that allow systems to declare what behaviors they support (such as specific resource interactions, search parameters, security capabilities, or broader compliance characteristics), reference those features within resources like CapabilityStatement, and enable clients or peer systems to query and compare feature support dynamically. By focusing on granular, contextualized “features” rather than only coarse-grained conformance, the IG enhances discoverability and interoperability by supporting feature negotiation, conditional processing, and clearer expectations between systems, ultimately enabling more adaptive and interoperable FHIR ecosystems.

ALTERNATIVE NAMES
HL7 FHIR® Implementation Guide: Application Feature Framework, Edition 1 may also go by the following names or acronyms:
BENEFITS
- Standardized feature description – Provides a consistent way for systems to define and describe their capabilities (“features”) such as supported resources, operations, and behaviors [build.fhir.org]
- Improved interoperability transparency – Enables applications and administrators to easily understand what another system can do and how it behaves [confluence.hl7.org]
- Dynamic capability discovery – Allows clients to query servers to determine supported features at runtime, reducing guesswork and manual configuration [build.fhir.org]
- Enhanced API negotiation – Supports more precise alignment between client and server capabilities, improving compatibility and integration success [github.com]
- Extends existing FHIR conformance resources – Integrates with CapabilityStatement and other resources to provide richer, more granular capability information [confluence.hl7.org]
- Context-aware feature qualification – Lets features be scoped or qualified (e.g., by code system or use case), enabling more accurate representation of real-world behavior [build.fhir.org]
- Supports feature-based workflows and processing – Allows systems to tag resources with feature metadata, enabling downstream systems to adjust processing logic accordingly [confluence.hl7.org]
- Facilitates ecosystem compatibility and automation – Encourages machine-readable feature declarations that enable smarter orchestration, testing, and system integration [build.fhir.org]
