Implementation Guide

Details

The objective of the 'Terminology Fundamentals' is to develop a cross-paradigm Implementation Guide (IG) that encompasses the fundamental principles of terminology found in HL7 published standards. This initiative aims to showcase the basics of terminology previously documented in HL7 standards, adopting an approach that is neutral across product families. The IG is designed to be a valuable educational resource for those seeking to enhance their understanding of terminology within the realm of HL7. It is important to note that its purpose is not to offer guidance on implementation specifics, as other resources are available for that purpose.

'Terminology Fundamentals' will draw upon information from 'Core Principles and Properties of HL7 Version 3 Models, Release 2,' primarily sourced from 'Chapter 5: Coded Model Elements and their Vocabularies.' However, its scope is not restricted to this chapter. Despite the focus of the retired specification (as of 2022) on the HL7 Version 3 standard and the Reference Information Model (RIM), 'Terminology Fundamentals' will not concentrate on V3-specific references.

Additionally, 'Terminology Fundamentals' will incorporate insights from 'Characteristics of a Value Set Definition, Release 1.' This active standard (reaffirmed in 2023) outlines the process of creating an HL7 conformant value set. Notably, 'Characteristics of a Value Set Definition, Release 1' considers 'Core Principles and Properties of HL7 Version 3 Models, Release 2' as a prerequisite, referencing the definitions and concepts outlined in Core Principles. This alignment positions the two standards as ideal candidates for integration into a unified cross-paradigm informative IG, aiming to impart fundamental terminology knowledge to the HL7 community.

To retain terminology related knowledge previously published in HL7 standards while presenting the information in a way that is not specific to any HL7 product family.
