Details

The Blueprint is a visual reference, intended to model 'classic' blueprints as used in the architecture/construction industry. By creating an approachable, easy-to-consume reference, the Health Services Orchestration Blueprint will help convey good industry practices and draw attention to how FHIR can be leveraged in concert with other technologies, techniques, and standards to build heterogeneous solutions. The product is intended to serve as a 'desk reference' to help implementers make informed architectural and design decisions, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of the approaches.

We envision the blueprint artifact manifesting as a 3-4 "page" artifact. The first page will provide a frame of reference differentiating the 'classic' use of FHIR calls implementing a request-response pattern and relating that to an orchestrated interaction. The purpose is to contrast these styles and help implementers make informed decisions about which approach is best suited to their business need.

The second page will delve into technical implications, illustrating how FHIR resources and BPM+ workflows and approaches can be used in concert, informing specific architectural decisions.

The final page will highlight specific implication considerations, demonstrating a use case employing these approaches and demonstrating the complementary roles of FHIR and BPM+.

While there are countless uses of FHIR in support of divergent sets of use cases, best-practices to visualize how different systems, components, resources, and workflows and how they come together can be lacking. The concept of orchestration is a discipline heavily embedded in web services and systems integration work, focused on the 'flow of control' among actors to fulfill a value chain or use case. The purpose of the Blueprint activity is to express core knowledge, best-practices, patterns, and references on these topics to help educate, inform, and guide consumer and implementers.

There is a spectrum of ways that system interactions can be realized leveraging FHIR and interaction patterns, and at present the understanding and guidance about how those systems come together to meet business needs is often addressed use-case by use-case. Other industries often have overarching patterns and best practices that help guide or govern use of integrated components. By creating a blueprint, HL7 will be able to more effectively communicate possible or intended interactions among these capabilities. Through the blueprint metaphor, visual representations of these approaches and technologies will illustrate misconceptions and how orchestration approaches can be used in concert to meet specific situational needs and requirements.
