Domain Analysis Model (DAM)

White Paper (Balloted Informative)

Details

he Pathogen Genomics Domain Analysis Model (DAM) will define the key concepts, relationships, and workflows required to represent genomic observations of microorganisms within HL7 standards. “Pathogen” in this context encompasses microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) rather than macroscopic organisms.

The DAM will characterize how microbial genomic data and their contextual metadata are generated, interpreted, and exchanged across laboratory, clinical, public-health, and environmental settings. It will explore recurring information patterns that cut across microorganisms and use cases, such as how genomic traits of concern are represented, how contextual information accompanies those results, and how these data flow between systems. Wastewater and other environmental surveillance activities will serve as examples of cross-domain applications that highlight the need for common structures.

Anticipated outputs include conceptual information and workflow models, use-case narratives, and mappings to relevant HL7 FHIR resources. The DAM will provide a foundation for subsequent HL7 artifacts, most immediately a FHIR R6 Pathogen Genomics Reporting Implementation Guide, thus supporting consistent, context-aware representation of microbial genomic data within a One Health framework.

Genomic sequencing of microorganisms underpins modern diagnostics, surveillance, and outbreak response, yet HL7 standards lack a unified framework for representing microbial genomic data. Existing HL7 FHIR Genomics profiles focus primarily on human variation and cannot consistently express microbial attributes such as lineage, virulence, transmissibility, or environmental context. This limits interoperability among laboratory information systems, electronic health records, and public-health repositories.

The Pathogen Genomics DAM will address this gap by documenting the common information requirements that span microorganisms and use cases, from clinical reporting to population and environmental surveillance. It will clarify how essential contextual metadata (for example, specimen provenance, geographic origin, and sequencing method) influence interpretation and data exchange. By harmonizing terminology and workflow understanding across stakeholders, the DAM will establish a shared foundation for subsequent HL7 standards development, advancing HL7’s capacity to support One Health data exchange for microbial genomics.
