Details

The project aims to develop the Patient-Generated Health Data Implementation Guide for health data collected via Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect.

This guide will provide standardized data structure and code for capturing data in Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect, ensuring interoperability and consistency across platforms.

We will leverage existing initiatives and standards to harmonize data structures and coding practices with established guidelines.

Specifically, we will:

- Align our efforts with the potential standards outlined in the Patient Contributed Data White Paper Release 1, as detailed in Table 5.

- Review and incorporate insights from relevant projects related to patient-generated health data that have emerged up to 2024.

Among the projects related to patient-generated health data, [the Personal Health Records IG](https://confluence.hl7.org/display/PE/2024-01+Standard+Personal+Health+Record+%28SPHR%29+Track) defines Logical models and codesystems for Apple HealthKit data.

In this project, we will define physical FHIR profiles for HealthKit and Health Connect data.

By establishing these standardized FHIR profiles, we aim to facilitate seamless integration and utilization of patient-generated health data across diverse healthcare systems, ultimately improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

As smartphones and wearable devices become more prevalent, the amount of personal health data recorded by apps and sensors is increasing.

Utilizing this health data allows us to gather insights into an individual's daily lifestyle, environment, and behavior that are not typically accessible through medical consultations or research, leading to new treatments and research outcomes.

iOS's HealthKit and Android's Health Connect have become the de facto standards for recording patient-generated health data on smartphones.

Each framework provides APIs for handling health data from applications on the same OS, but they do not offer APIs for exporting data externally.

Consequently, the following needs have been identified:

1. Interoperability

- Different platforms use varying data formats for the same concepts, creating challenges in data sharing and integration. Standardizing data will facilitate seamless communication between different systems.

2. Data Consistency

- Ensuring consistent health data across various platforms is crucial for accurate analysis and reporting. Standardization will help maintain uniformity in data representation.

3. User Empowerment

- Standardizing data empowers users to have better control over their health information, allowing them to easily share it with healthcare providers or researchers, thus promoting personalized healthcare solutions.

4. Integration with Existing Systems

- Many healthcare organizations already utilize FHIR. This project will facilitate the integration of patient-generated health data into existing electronic health record systems, enhancing overall healthcare delivery.
