Details

The goal of this project is to develop a peritonitis surveillance module in NHSN via Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) that provides standardized surveillance criteria for peritoneal dialysis associated peritonitis events. The CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) is a widely used healthcare-associated infection tracking system. It provides local and national data needed to identify problem locations, success of prevention measures, and more. Through NHSN, dialysis facilities are able to directly report information related to dialysis outcomes and adverse events in both outpatient and home dialysis facilities.

This module would expand on reporting capabilities of facilities who have patients on peritoneal dialysis. PD is a form of dialysis that involves using the lining of your abdomen, or peritoneum, to filter your blood. Data reported in this module would include denominator data such as the number of patients enrolled the first week of the month. Additionally, it would collect data such as patient demographics and peritonitis related information such as risk factors, event details, outcomes, and pathogens.

There are currently no comprehensive reporting standards for PD-associated peritonitis which is troublesome due to historically high complications. Through expanded reporting efforts, standardized data can be collected to better develop national benchmarks, develop treatment strategies, and monitor outcomes.
